Pat Blankenship

Earl August "Pat" Blankenship, 86, of Springfield (Willard), Mo., passed away at St. John's Hospital in Springfield on Wednesday, November 24, 2010. Earl was born August 11, 1924 in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Myrl and Beulah (Benson) Blankenship. Raised in Longwood, FL, Pat served in WWII as a Torpedo-man 2nd class on the Navy destroyer U.S.S. Howorth as part of the Pacific Fleet. Following the war, he graduated from the University of Florida at Gainesville with a degree in Forestry and a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He married Betty Louise O'Dell of Pittsburgh, Pa. , June 9, 1948 and came to Pittsburgh where he obtained a job in the Forestry Division of the City of Pittsburgh. Working his way up from a laborer, Earl was promoted to be chief City Forester in 1955, a position he held for 20 years. Earl was a member of the International Shade Tree Conference, a founding member of the Society of Municipal Arborists and a Mason-Shriner since 1967. He ran his own business, Earl A. Blankenship Tree Service, following retirement from the City of Pittsburgh. In 1985, Earl and Betty relocated to Inverness, Florida. Betty, his loving wife of 46 years, died there in 1994. He married Mildred Crane Nelson July 2, 1995 in Springfield, Mo. where he had lived ever since. Pat was a member of the Willard Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church where he enjoyed the fellowship of many friends.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, Earl was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Gale Leonard of Pittsburgh; a granddaughter, Anne Rebecca Matviya of New Alexandria, Pa.; a brother Robert of Sarasota, Fla., and a sister, Marjorie Grant, of Willard. He is survived by sons Robert, and his wife Becky, of Longwood, Fla., and Damon, and his wife Beth, of Pittsburgh; daughters Christine Matviya, and her husband John, of New Alexandria, Pa., and Beth Ann Covelli, and her husband Greg, of St. Charles IL; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and step-children Rebecca Aton, and husband Jim of Willard; Mike Crane and Mark Crane, and wife Cara, of Republic; 4 step-grandchildren, 3 step-great grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.

Services will be held Friday, November 26 at 11 a.m. in the Willard Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, Willard, Mo., with the Rev. Lorraine Dill officiating, under care and direction of Wilson Brim Daniel Funeral Home, Ash Grove. Inurnment will be at a later time in Longwood, FL. The family will receive friends Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:45 prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Willard Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church.
